Field Music Meltdown

Friday, November 14 and Saturday, 15 November

“In a world moving too fast, Field Music have created music so lovely and layered it makes time stop,” said Q Magazine, while Mojo said of their second album,”At the end … you’re almost compelled to jump off the sofa and applaud,” and Uncut lauded them as “a glorious band, supple as a jazz trio, punctual as a chamber troupe.”

Live music, film, and DJs – all bases are covered by Field Music as they present a two-day Meltdown festival at the city’s only venue for such an event, the Star and Shadow Cinema.

A surreal opening on Friday, November 14, courtesy of Monty Python’s Eric Idle as writer and co-director, is 1978’s cult musical mockumentary All You Need Is Cash, about the fictional band the Rutles, created by Idle and Neil Innes as a pastiche on the Beatles. The film is currently being rereleased as a special anniversary edition DVD on the 30th November (http://www.secondsightfilms.co.uk/rutles_cs.htm).

Martin Scorsese and American-Canadian rockers The Band then welcome you to their Last Waltz, a chance to experience their final gig, along with legends both dead and alive, including Clapton, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters and the oldest man in rock, Ronnie Wood.

Original sounds will be delivered by singer-songwriter Trev Gibb (backed by Field Music themselves); and sharing the decks will be Cool For Cats and Mister and Mister (aka two thirds of Maximo Park).

Saturday will revisit the 1960s in celluloid through the Pawnbroker, before quintessential Britishness arrives in the form of the quintessentially silly Sir Henry At Rawlinson End, written by ex-Bonzo Vivian Stanshall and starring Trevor Howard as Sir Henry.

There’ll then be a live set from Maximo Park’s Duncan Lloyd, who has a new solo album out very soon, followed by dancing to a Field Music DJ set … and all this can be enjoyed from as little as a fiver.
